Noise generated by aircraft is the first cause of nuisance felt by people living in the vicinity of the airport. In order to master and moreover, reduce noise nuisance, action must be taken at several levels. Noise is a complex problem which involves several actors, each with its own role, responsibilities and levers of specific and complementary actions.
The control of noise nuisance implies intervention at two levels: controlling noise at the source, and controlling the manner of piloting the aircraft and the establishment of air traffic procedures.
Essentially there are two causes for noise at the source:
The parameters that affect the emission of noise are linked
Aircraft are classified into different categories according to their acoustic performance measured under specific conditions. This classification corresponds to the certification of aircraft.
Noise propagation is affected by many parameters:
Perceived noise nuisance may vary for the same level of measured noise. Indeed, noise is considered to be more of a nuisance during the night than during the day. Moreover, the higher the relative level of a noise event is against background noise, the more acutely it will be perceived by the inhabitants.
