History of Sion Airport

The first café-restaurant at Sion Airport, with a dewoitine in the forergroundSion Airport was inaugurated in June 1935. In the sameyear, the Municipality of Sion entrusted the Valais Section of the Swiss Aero-Club with the operation of the airport. It also opened the first flying school in Valais. The Airport's location at the very center of the Alps had drawn the interest of the Federal Ministry of Defense, and a contract was signed between the two parties in 1937.

Since 2001 Sion Airport has been operated under the terms of a new license granted for a period of 30 years.

Currently, Sion Airport is the only mixed airport licensed in Switzerland where civilian and military flights are operated side by side.

A single man, Hermann Geiger, Glacier and rescue pilot, who became the first airport director in 1946, would leave his mark on the entire history of flight in Valais and Sion.

A new threshold was crossed in 1991, with the inauguration of the new modern terminal and more importantly, the ILS, an instrument approach and landing system which opened the way for charter flights into Sion Airport.

Today, Sion Airport offers
